The Iron Bridge


Ironbridge is a village on the River Severn, at the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge, near Telford in Shropshire, England. This area is known as the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. As industry grew on both sides of the river, the need for a crossing which would allow sailing boats to pass became greater. Construction of the bridge began in 1779 and it was opened on New Year's Day, 1781. It was the first arch bridge in the world to be made from cast iron. It is now part of a UNESCO Wor
