Courtyard and Cloisters within the Convento de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Convent), Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
The Convento de Santa Clara is one of the most important religious buildings in Madeira, and one of the island's most popular visitor attractions. Founded in 1469 by João Gonçalves de Câmara, one of the grandsons of Zarco, the man who discovered Madeira, the Santa Clara Convent is where Zarco himself is buried (under the high altar). From the peaceful cloister the landmark bell tower can be admired, its minaret-style design a reflection of the influence of Moorish Seville, where the tiles decorating the onion-shaped dome were made.
