Founded in 1263, Balliol is one of Oxford's oldest and largest colleges; it is located on Broad Street, at the historic heart of the city, and always distinguished by the massed bicycles parked outside. Like all Oxford Collages, it has produced many Nobel laureates, British Prime Ministers and luminaries over its long history. It is a little known fact that Balliol is also famed for its tortoises. One is always in residence, cared for assiduously by a designated student known as 'Comrade Tortoise'. Every June, mascot tortoises from many colleges gather at Balliol for a race. A very slow race.
