National brood frame showing good brood pattern
This image shows a brood frame with a good brood pattern. A good brood pattern is where the queen has laid eggs in adjacent beeswax cells and most or all of them are alive and growing. The worker bees then put wax caps over the cells so that the grubs can grow. The holes in the pattern are used by worker bees to heat the brood by inserting their bodies and vibrating their wing muscles. This creates heat which then spreads through the brood
