Rifleman Charles H. Smith, 1st/8th West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in action on 9th October 1917 near Wallemolen and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Acknowledgment notes were issued by Buckingham Palace on the death of a soldier. It reads: "I join with my grateful people in sending you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War" and is signed "George "
