Manufacturing Notes. The steel plates and shapes for the armored ships Maine andTexas, now under construction at the New York and NorfolkNavy Yards, are to be furnished by Carnegie Brotheis & Com-pany, limited, and the Linden Steel Works in Pittsburgh, thecontracts having been awarded to those firms. At the recent Exhibition in Pittsburgh a remarkable displayof aluminum was made by the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, the including probably the largest amount of that metalever shown at once. It included a number of small ingotsweighing 5 lbs. each and aggregating in all about one ton inweight ; one large ingot weighing 150 lbs. and a number ofarticles manufactured of the metal. The Company has beenvery successful in its production of aluminum so far, and theprice of thismetal in workable form has^alreadyfallen ELEVATOR WITH SPRAGUE ELECTRIC MOTOR. and the Sprague motor was substituted. This is now givingperfect satisfaction, and is considered to be one of the best-running elevator plants in Philadelphia. A notable point about the whole arrangement is that the mini-mum of space has been taken for every part of this pump was manufactured specially for this plant, and thearrangement for reduction of speed between the armature shaftand the pump is made in the compact manner shown. Themotor operates the pump against the pressure in the tank, there being no overflow, and when the maximum pressure isreached the motor runs empty, automatically cutting down theamount of electric current taken from the line, so that onlysufficient current is used to supply the energy necessary to keepthe motor in revolution. The illustration is made from a photograph taken directlyfrom the plant, and shows the details of the installation verycompletely. The Bethleh
