The value of autographs is often equally diffi-cult to assess, as may be gathered from the factthat a single sheet of paper on which were writtenthree short poems in the handwTiting of CharlesLamb, sold in December, 1902, for the sum of^74, while a very brief autograph letter byThackeray—merely declining an invitation todinner—containing a sketch of the writer byhimself, sold for no less than ^26.
