Montserrat Volcano Observatory. Tourists viewing the Soufriere Hills volcano at the purpose-built Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO). The observatory is situated in Flemings, 6 kilometres from the volcano. Soufriere Hills volcano has been continually erupting since 18 July 1995 and has rendered two thirds of the island uninhabitable. The MVO, which is managed by the British Geological Survey, monitors the volcano's activity and advises the government of any risks or hazards.
