Upton Community Protection Camp was established in April 2014 when a small group of anti-fracking protesters, veterans from Barton Moss anti-fracking camp, set up the protest camp on land off Duttons Lane, Upton, Chester where Dart Energy ( now owned by iGas ) planned an exploratory well for coal bed methane. In Manchester High Court Friday 20th. November 2015, Justice Hodge granted possession of the land to iGas and gave the protesters until 16:00 hours Friday 4th. December 2015 to vacate the site. Local residents have supported the camp and continue their support to the protesters who are defying the eviction order and building barricades and plan direct action to hinder the bailiffs during the eviction process. Both locals and protesters on the site believe that fracking will cause air and land pollution in addition to a risk that the aquifer below the site will be polluted. They state research from Australia and America prove the process of hydraulic fracturing is a serious risk to pollution of the aquifer. Thursday 10th. December 2015 is the 6th. day since they were ordered to vacate the site.
