Mark di Suvero 'Magma' sculpture information board, green grass towards MIS Historic Centre, Crissy Field, San Francisco, USA

In May 2013, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), in partnership with the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Park Conservancy, decided to display eight of Mark di Suvero's large metal sculptures at Crissy Field. The display was to run until May 2014. Each sculpture is some 15 m (50 ft) high and 12 m (40 ft) wide. This information board, entitled 'Magma 2008-12 steel'. It reads: ' "Magma". a recently completed work that has never been shown publicly, continues di Suvero's exploration of motion and counterbalance. Its composition is dominated by a horizontal I-beam that is balanced between two X0like steel forms. The cut-steel rings that encircle the beams are movable rather than structural, and respond to shifts in the wind. When viewed from either side, the sculpture frames the landscape almost like an oversized picture frame. When viewed from either end, however, the work is a study in formal complexity, its angles, discs, and lines resembling intricate, interlocking layers.' The 'Magma' sculpture rises in the background of the shot. Building 640, the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Centre (left background), is the former site of the first Military Intelligence Service Language School during World War 2. The US Army established a secret school to teach the Japanese language, the first classes beginning 1st November 1941.
