Lamplighter servicing an oil streetlamp. From the ladder he is handing down the oil reservoir to his assistant to be filled with whale oil before he trims the wick. One of the earliest uses of whale oil up this time was in domestic lighting but was eventually replaced by more odourless and smokeless alternatives. The biggest demand for whale oil came when it was adopted for street lighting. By 1750 London had installed over 5000 street lights. Following the pioneering work of William Murdoch gas lighting began to be installed from January 1807 by the London and Westminster Gas Light and Coke Company.
