MY IDEALEDJOHN BULLESSES BY YOSHIO MARKING AUTHOR OF a JAPANESE ARTIST IN LONDON ILLUSTRATED LONDON CONSTABLE & COMPANY v^ HQ INTRODUCTION JOHN BULLESS is my home-made English forthe English woman ! It was such long, longages ago when most of my worshipful John Bullessfriends were not yet born, and I too was such alittle kid, that my father went to Kobe or Yoko-hama (I forget which) and brought back a chromo-lithograph picture. So far as I remember, it wasgiven him by some Dutch officer. The picture was a portrait of a most beautifulgirl of about eighteen. Her chestnut-colouredhair was divided in the middle and waved downon both sides of a well-formed white opened her big round and blue eyes and lookeda little sideway, while her crescent-like eyebrowscame down nearly to the level of her nose was short and high with such a nice form—perhaps a little turned up, what the Parisianscall Le Nez Montmartre. Her rosy lips werebroken withmyidealedjohnbul00maki
