Machrie Moor stone circles, Arran, Scotland, UK: Looking NE over Circle I to the small stones of Circle XI & the peak of Goat Fell. Part of a complex of Bronze Age ritual sites on the moor around Moss Farm. The circles appear have been sited on the natural amphitheatre of the moor with reference to prominent features on the NE skyline, particularly a prominent notch which is intersected by the midsummer solstice rising sun. Photo taken 7-15pm 21 June 1995. Circle I has a mix of rounded granite glacial erratics (female?) & finer grained microgranite pillars (male?); it was preceded by a horseshoe-shaped timber setting within two concentric rings of timber posts. Circle XI was covered in peat until 1978, its ten small stones were preceded by a ring of ten timber posts.
