He is a Democrat in political relations, but has neverbeen a particularly active partisan, although always true and loyalto his pplitioa] convictions. BECKETT This gentleman has the distinction of being the pioneer merchantof Purdin and one of the most active and potential forces in buildingand developing the town to its present size and importance. When helocated there and opened the first store in the place or vicinity, thesite was marked by a saw mill, but there were no roads leading to it,and the whole of its history was yet to be made. Mr. Beckett enteredinto the spirit of the requirements and has aided greatly in meetingthem and making the most of an unpromising situation. His modestlittle store has expanded into the imposing establishment and largetrade of the Purdin Mercantile Company, of which he was the founderand has been the president from the beginning of its successful andprofitable career.
