The elose proximity of coal and of iron ore to the. River Road, Showing Scioto Bottom Corn Lands, Portsmouth Ohio River caused these mineral deposits of the county to receive earlierattention than in other sections, where the means of transportationwere few, and those limited to wagons, mules and horses. The Ohiocanal, which was commenced in 1825 and finished in 18:32, also furnishedextra transportation facilities, and gave an impetus to the county in itsmaterial prosperity which lasted for many years. Thus the iron, coaland free stone gave wealth and employment, and the county increasedquite rapidly in population. The mining and shipment of these valu-able accessories of wealth caused Scioto County 1o be considered afavored locality. The stone quarries in the west did not commandso much attention as the coal and iron of the eastern section, and it wasnot long before the smoke
