Harcourt^O. A. C, Guelph. Estimating Yield. Measure off 50 feet of an inside row which fairly represents the plot-Lift the beets in this measured distance, and cut the tops off at the lowest leaf-scar ; cut offall fibres and rootlets less than one-quarter inch in diameter ; remove adhering earth ; brush, count and weigh the beets. Enter the figures on the accompanying furm. Go to another partof the same plot and repeat the operation : thus determining the weight of beets on twoseparate 50-foot sections of the same plot. Determine carefully the distance the rows areapart, and note on the I. Good-shaped beets. U. Ill-shaped beets due to improper condition cf subsoil, and to being grown too far apart. It is somewhat difficult to collect a number of beets from a quarter acrepatch that will accuratel}^ represent the plot, and the smaller the number takenthe Itss likely it is to be a fair sample. In order to decrease the possibility oferror from this source, I doubled the number of beets liftel for the last determining the jield per acre, it is recognized that the most accurate way isto determine the actual w^eight of beets on the plot, but this would have entailedan inunense amount of labour, as there were nearly 200 quarter-acre plotsincluded in the experiment. The yield per acre may. however, be estimatedwith considerable accuracy, by lifting and weighing the beets from a represent-ative portion of the field. Needless to say, great care must be exercised in theselection of these representative portions, and that the l
