Jefferson was the son ofa well-to-do Virginia 1760, when seventeenyears old, he came to Will-iamsburg and entered Will-iam and Mary College. After-wards he took up the studyand practice of law, at whichhe proved himself a greatsuccess. When, early in 1775, theHouse of Burgesses met at Richmond, Jefferson was amember. Here he heard Patrick Henrys second stirringspeech—the speech denouncing all efforts at peace and 268. THOMAS JEFFERSON for himself choosing liberty or death. Jefferson was thrilledby Henrys eloquence and heartily approved his motionthat Virginia be immediately put into a state of defense. Later in that same year Jefferson was sent to representVirginia at the Continental Congress, which met in Phil-adelphia. The crisis had come. England had thoroughly rousedthe blood of her American colonists.
