Odo of Bayeux (1030-1097), Earl of Kent and Bishop of Bayeux, was the half-brother of William the Conqueror, and was a trusted royal minister. On some occasions when William was absent in Normandy he served as de facto regent of England dealing with the rebellion led by Waltheof and Ralph, Earl of Norfolk. In 1082 King William heard complaints about Odo's rule, and returned to England to arrest Odo himself on charges of misgovernment and oppression. He was found guilty and kept in prison until Robert of Mortain achieved his release on the death of William the Conqueror in 1087.
