Movers and Seconders of the Address: the Marquis of Huntly, 1870. Engraving from a photograph by John Watkins. 'The Right Hon. Charles Gordon, Marquis of Huntly, Earl of Aboyne, in the Peerage of Scotland, and Baron Meldrum, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, by which title he sits, is the tenth Marquis of that title, premier Marquis of Scotland, and head of the house of present Marquis was born in 1847, and was educated at Eton, and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He succeeded his father in 1863. Having been chosen to move the Address in the House of Peers, it is to be presumed that he is something more than a Whig, though hereditarily connected with that party. On the occasion of making what may be called his political debut, the Marquis wore a Highland costume, the kilt and plaid being of course of the tartan of the clan Gordon; and the ornaments and arms, being those of a chieftain, were proportionably rich and the discharge of his duty in moving the Address, Lord Huntly was as successful as anyone who performs that function with the modesty and moderation which are attached to it by prescription; and, indeed, he did so with some spirit, and, on the whole, made a favourable impression'.
