New Castle is, therefore, one ofthe very oldest settlements in theUnited States, Its situation at themouth of a broad and deep river, with a good harbor on either side of it, re-commended it to the early settlerswho sought a livelihood from theneighboring ocean, and still com-mends it to the people from the inte-rior, who periodically seek on itsshores the pleasure and benefit ofbrine-laden ocean breezes. SirFerdinando Gorges and CaptainJohn Mason planned to create on theseshores a feudal estate, the princelyrevenues of which would for countlessyears revert to their lordly descend-ants.
