Front view of HGC 130 G351 1945 Guy Arab II Park Royal UH30 26R The only surviving wartime utility London bus At the Cobham Bus Museum Annual Spring Bus Coach gathering at Wisley Airfield Surrey 5th April 2009 During World War II new buses had to be built to replace those destroyed but because of the shortage of materials the bus manufacturers had to build buses from low grade components These so called utility vehicles were built to specifications issued by the Ministry of Supply G351 was actually built just after the war ended but before restrictions were fully withdrawn Like most buses of the period the frame was of wood covered with steel panels G 351 entered service with London Transport in February 1946 at Upton Park garage east London working on routes 86A 101 and 175 It remained at Upton Park until its withdrawal in 1952 It stayed in store until April 1953 and was sold to Burton Corporation in November 1953 where it became number 70 in their fleet It was finally withdrawn at the beginning of 1967 Obtained for preservation in mid 1967 by Cobham museum member Mr John Lines the bus is the only remaining example of 435 wartime utility London buses Donated to Cobham Bus Museum in 1980 it was fully restored in two parts and completed in 2005 Chassis Guy Arab II Body Park Royal H30 26R Engine Gardner 5 cylinder LW diesel with manual gearbox Vehicle Classification 2 3G8 2 Date into service 1945 Date of withdrawal 1952 Cobham Bus Museum The London Bus Preservation Trust Ltd Redhill Road Cobham Surrey KT11 1EF Tel 01932 868665 Web site www lbpt org
