The sawfish is named for its flat elongated snout with serrated edges that resemble large teeth on two edges of a saw blade. Also known as a carpenter shark, this member of the ray family uses its extended nose to slash at swimming prey and also to dig up crustaceans from the sea floor where the flat-bodied marine animal spends most of its time.
