Smailholm Tower Scottish Borders Scotland


Probably built in the middle of the 15th Century for the Pringles It was subsequently bought in 1645 by Sir William Scott of Harden an ancestor of Sir Walter Scott It was to the farmhouse of Sandyknowe to the south east of the tower that the young Walter Scott came as a sickly child from Edinburgh to enjoy clean air and country life in the care of his grandparents Here he heard Borders ballads and folk tales which were to provide the mainspring of his literary life in later years
