Venus and Jupiter, by the British clergyman and astronomer Thomas William Webb (1807-1885). The drawings at top are a series of eight pictures showing the phases of Venus. The drawings of Jupiter (bottom) are a sequence of 12, numbered from 33 to 44, showing details of its cloud bands. The first two are from 19 January 1872 and 20 February 1873. The remaining 10 are from 11 March 1874 to 30 April 1874. Early observations of Jupiter and Venus with telescopes began with Galileo in 1610. More detailed observations were made over the following centuries as telescope design improved.
