George Douglas Campbell (1823-1900), 8th Duke of Argyll, Scottish Whig politician and scientist. Campbell was Secretary of State for India from 1868-1874. A geologist, he supported the cataclysmic school of geology rather than uniformitarianism. He was also an opponent of the theories of Darwin.
