The streamitself rides above its valley formany miles upon a dike whichit has built, and over which itspills its Hoods every year. Inbuilding this dike an arm ofthe Gulf of California, whichformerly extended into Cali-fornia as far north as Indio, was cut off. Under condi-tions almost tropical, with anaverage annual evaporation ofeight feet, the inclosed watersevaporated, leaving exposed abed of the sunken desert, nowknown as Im])erial floods of the Colo- rado deposited over portions of the old sea-bedlayers of rich sediment and carried the saltsto the lowest part of the depression, known asSalton Sink. A few years ago men came and viewed thesunken desert, and realizing its possibilities whenwatered they constructed an elaborate systemof canals and ditches, and turned a portion ofthe stream flow upon 100,000 acies of aridland, all below sea level. Irrigation wrought itsusual miracle. Settlers flocked in, towns sprang. RELIEF MAP OF THE LOWER COLORADO RIVER, SHOWING IRRIOAHLELANDS IN THE UNITED STATES ANDMEXICO.
