The victory came too late, however, forJahangir had scarcely restored order at Kabul and paida visit to the happy vale of Kashmir, his favourite sum-mer resort, when he was seized by a mortal sickness,and died in October, 1627, before he had attained hissixtieth year. There was now little use in opposingShah Jahan, who had Mahabat Khan at his side andthe full support of the army. The empresss brother,the minister Asaf Khan, joined the rising power, whichhe had always favoured, and Prince Shahriyar, whonever had the smallest title to the throne, was EMPRESS NUK JAHAN, THE WIFE OFJAHANGIR. Thegreat empress proudly retired into private life, wearingthenceforward the white robe of mourning for herqueer, loving husband. She was held in honour, anddrew a handsome pension; but she appeared no morein public, and maintained her rigid seclusion imtil in1646 she was laid in her grave close beside the tomb ofJahangir at Lahore.
