The River Esk and St. Mary's Church on a cliff above the historic town in Whitby, North Yorkshire, Britain Whitby, a seaside town and small fishing port is on the north Yorkshire coast, facing the North Sea in Britain. Its other famous prominent landmark are the ruins of Whitby Abbey, also overlooking the town nearby. Whitby is associated with Royal Navy Captain James Cook, voyager and discoverer of Australia where he learned his seamanship in the harbour, the horror novel of Dracula and the famous Whitby Jet black and alum found in the surrounding cliffs.
