The High Level bridge spanning the river Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead was designed by Robert Stephenson and T. E. Harrison and completed in 1849. The bridge has two decks, providing a rail link above and a road and pedestrian way below. It is constructed from wrought and cast iron using bowstring arches supported by masonry piers.
