Restoration work at the Cemetery and Ossuaire de Douaumont, Verdun, France. Renovation work costing €3 million ( three million Euros ) at the Cemetery and Ossuaire de Douaumont in the centre of one of the bloodiest of World War One battlefields in France above the River Meuse to the east of Verdun. 14264 new Quartz and white cement crosses have been erected replacing the original crosses from the 1930's. As of today the dead are not named but naming plaques will be attached as part of the 4 year renovation project which includes restoration of the Ossuaire, in the background, which contains the bones of over 130,000 French and Germman dead from the battle of Verdun in 1916. The project is expected to be complete in time to comemorate the centenary of the start of WW1 in 2014 and the battle of Verdun in 1916.
