The rally at Hunter was a speak out against this poisoned gift. It might feel like a victory but what it means is more of the same--same rising tuition, same overworked teachers and underpaid staff, same crumbling buildings and same screw-you atmosphere. Is this the only university we can get? Or is something better possible?

Last week as many of you know Cuomo backed off on his plan to slash the CUNY budget by $485 million, but only at the cost of *more* tuition hikes and the further privatization of our university. What privatization means is that the classes, departments, and programs at colleges will be judged on whether or not they make money, not whether they make you smarter, think critically, or allow you to make your own judgements about what is valuable in the world. It is becoming more and more evident that the only way change will take place real change is though an all out student and faculty strike across the city and state. A number of people spoke about police on campus, and the oppression by police and campus secuirty, some of whice i know to be fact. What i saw today at this small rally was a 1 to 2 or 3 ratio of NYPD and campus Security for each student at the event as well as campus security. Our Colleges and Universitys should never become a police state, but it seems that those at the top care more about maintaining there position and status then they do about the rights and freedoms of the students and workers.
