Conca dell'Incoronata with its wooden doors while snowing. It was designed by Leonardo da Vinci for the naviglio canal - Milan, Italy

The "Conca dell'Incoronata" is an ancient navigation basin dating back to 1496 designed by Leonardo da Vinci who improved some technical details of this kind of artifacts. It is located in Milan near the church of Santa Maria Incoronata, from which it takes its name, which was used by boats to overcome the difference in height between the section of the canal known as "Naviglio della Martesana" (1463) and the inner circle of the canal in Milan downtown called "Cerchia dei Navigli". It is a type of manufactured very widespread along the entire route of the navigli. The system of the navigli was a very ancient system of canals and waterways that surrounded Milan and penetrated the city. Its aims were many: irrigation, navigation, river interconnections and water supply of the defensive moat of the Castello Sforzesco. The circular canal inside the city, called the "Cerchia dei Navigli", or also "Cerchia interna", took water from the North from the "Naviglio della Martesana" (derived from the river Adda) and from the South from the "Naviglio Grande" (derived from the river Ticino). The water then flowed out of the inner circle through irrigation ditches, through the "Naviglio Pavese" outgoing from the city (that fed it back into the Ticino) and from the "Vettabbia" outgoing from the city (and discharged its water into the Lambro river). The inner circle of the navigli and this section of the canal were buried between 1929 and 1930 at the same time as the closure of the Cerchia dei Navigli. Today projects are underway for the restoration and reactivation of the canal. Today, projects are underway for the restoration and reactivation of the entire water system of the navigli canals and its basins.
