He is theson of James and Katherine (Phibbs) Stewart, both natives of Pennsylvania,-from which state they moved to West Virginia and there married and rearedtheir family on their farm of about two hundred acres, and there they spenttheir last years. They had a large family, twelve children, only two of whomare now living, Robert N., of this sketch, and Mrs. Hattie Cooper. GeorgeStewart, the sulijects patemal grandfather, was a colonel in the Re\-olutionarywar. Robert N. Stewart grew up on the home farm and received his educa-tion in the public schools and at Fairview Academy in Virginia, then went to. ROBERT N. STEWART JASPER COUNTY, IOWA. I20I Pittsburgh, Pennsyhania, and took a business course. He emigrated to Iowaabout 1864 and located in Washington townsliip, Jasper county, and liere hekept a stage station. When J. B. (Irinnell was representing this district inCongress, the subject applied to hiin for a postoffice where Colfax now names were submitted, Colfax and Sheridan, and the subject chose theformer, hence naming the town, which is now well known over the two years Mr. Stewart li\ed in Prairie City and bought grain. Then hebought one hundred and sixty acres in Mound Prairie, which he broke andplaced under good improvements. By years of hard work and good manage-metn he prospered and added to his original purchase until he is now the ownerof four hundred acres of valuable land.
