In this photo taken aboard a German battleship at the beginning of World War I (1914-1918), the Kaiser (on the left) is talking with his naval commanders Admiral von Tirpitz (center) and Admiral von Holtzendorf (at right). At the outbreak of the war, the German naval fleet was tied with that of the United States for second place; Great Britain's fleet ranked first.
