In August, 1830, three birds of thisspecies, all young, alighted on some water near Otmoor, andwere shot by a farmer. In Norfolk the Garganey is notuncommon in the neighbourhood of Yarmouth, and occasionallybreeds about there; it also is known in different places inthe county. It has occurred in Surrey, at Godalming. Like-wise in Cambridgeshire. In Cornwall, Kent, Devon, and Essex,it is said to be GAEGANET. 21 In Scotland six specimens were obtained in Stirlingshire,during the last fortnight of March, 1841. In Orkney a few appear in the spring. In Ireland it is extremely rare, and the same observationis apphcable to Wales. The Grarganey resorts to low watery lands, and onlyoccasionally to the neighbourhood and estuaries of the sea-coast. It is a migratory or moveable species, in the spring andautumn months, and is seen with us on these occasions, mostso, it is said, in the former, for a brief space during eachchanging scene. Those that occur are probably strayindividuals, which have been driven out of their ordinarycourse. The vernal migration is made in March and Apri],and the autumnal in October and November. They travelby night, and in small parties. The Garganey is considered a remarkably delicate bird forthe table. It is not very shy in its habits, and soon becomestame in confinement.
