Lavoisier showed the errors of the theoryof phlogiston—that hypothetical, materialsubstance which was believed to be an ele-ment of all combustible compounds and toproduce fire when liberated. He provedfire to be the union of other elements witha gas which he named oxygen. Lavoisiers work goes on. In the ResearchLaboratories of the General Electric Com-pany the determination of the effects ofatmospheric airon lamp filaments, on metalsand on delicate instruments is possible be-cause of the discoveries of Lavoisier andhis contemporaries.
