Water clocks. 17th-century illustrations and text describing two types of water clocks: outflow (upper left) and inflow (lower left). This page is from book 19 ('Of Pneumatick Experiments') from 'Natural Magick' (1658), the English translation of 'Magia Naturalis' (1558) by Italian scholar and polymath Giambattista della Porta (). This work had been expanded to twenty books by 1589 and went through several editions in Latin and several translations. It popularised the natural sciences, and covered topics such as zoology, botany, metallurgy, geology, magnetism, medicine, chemistry, perfumes, cookery, glasses and optics, and astronomy.
