Tail flagellum not seen (either greatly shortened ordisappeared). In 2 the daughter (anterior) flagellum has appeared. In 4 the daughter nuclei arereconstituted. progression of an individual about to divide ceases, the body becomes rounded andthe long anterior flagellum becomes shortened (sometimes considerably), and may, Ibelieve, be occasionally quite absorbed (fig. 9, Plate 26). The tail flagellum is alwaysmuch shortened and may also disappear (cf. below). After the body has beenmotionless for 5 minutes or so, the shortened anterior flagellum waving sluggishly, anew small (anterior) flagellum appears, at first near the old one, but then becomingdisplaced to one side (text-fig. B 2). The clear, pear-shaped (nuclear) area near theoriginal anterior end of the body has disappeared and, owing to the granular contentsof this form, I could not trace the origin of the two daughter-nuclei in life; but theybecome visible
