Its fibres are dividedinto transverse and longitudinal. Of the former thereare two planes—superficial and deep. The longitudinallayers are likewise separated into two sets: the firstpasses upward between the transverse planes; the deep. The cerebelliun is situated beloAv the posterior lobesof the cerebrum. It is lodged in the inferior occipitalfossae. It weighs about five and one-half to six is about four inches transversely, two and one-halfinches antero-posterioiiy, two inches vertically at thethickest part. It is composed of a gray cortex and awhite medullary portion, in which there is imbedded an 302 PRACTICAL ANATOMY. open gray capsule, called the corpus dentatum. It con-sists of two symmetrical hemispheres joined together bya central constricted commissural portion. The uppersurface is flattened, slightly convex, and presents- twolobes,—a large anterior, the quadrate, and a narrowerportion, the semilunar. Along the median line is thetransverse commissure called the superior vermiformprocess, which begins at the anterior notch and termi-nates at the posterior
