The rise and fall of Azhar Mehdi, a drug addict

Azhar Mehdi had been taught classic singing by Master Mehdi Hassan. In the 1980s, Azhar had turned into a rising star. He gave many concerts, was surrounded by movie stars and was about to become a legend of his own. It was difficult for him to manage the pressure correlated with his fast ascension, so he started using recreational drugs. When he got used to them, the effect disappeared and Azhar started sniffing heroin, 'white sugar', to which he quickly became addicted. Soon, he couldn't sing any more. Azhar spent the rest of his life alone in a small dirty apartment in a courtyard behind Ali Park, Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. He was using drugs all day long. Azhar’s health had deteriorated to an extent where he has reached a terminal phase at age 55.
