Oestriol hormone molecule. Computer model showing the structure of the female sex hormone oestriol. Atoms are colour-coded - carbon: dark grey, hydrogen: light grey, and oxygen: red. Oestriol is one of three naturally occurring oestrogens, a class of hormones that are associated with the development of the female reproductive organs and secondary sex characteristics. It is produced at high levels by the placenta during pregnancy, although it is secreted by the ovaries at low levels in non-pregnant women.
