Unity. View of the space station module Unity (upper centre) in the Space Shuttle Endeavour's cargo bay. Unity (or Node-1) is the connecting module of the International Space Station (ISS). The module is being positioned by the Shuttle's Remote Manipulator System (RMS, at top centre) in order to connect it with the Russian- built control module Zarya. Launched in November 1998, Zarya was the first component of the ISS. The image was taken during mission STS-088 (4-15 December 1998). During the mission, Zarya was captured by Endeavour's RMS and connected with Unity. The ISS will be used to study the effect of weightlessness on materials and biological tissue.
