The dam is a composite structure, con-sisting of a long and high earthen em-bankment on the south bank of the riverand a reinforced concrete spillway in theexisting river channel, connected at itsnortherly end with the canal headgates. just above the site of the dam the rivermakes a long bend in the shape of a horse-shoe, which gives the locality its dam is situated at the toe of the horse-shoe. At this point the river is approxi-mately 600 ft. wide. The north or leftbank of the river has a narrow beachimmediately at the waters edge and only afew feet above it, beyond which is a cutbank rising over 100 ft. above the bed ofthe stream.
