The Karankawan Family.—This family was composed ofthe single tribe of the Karankawas in Texas, who dwelt on SanBernard or Matagorda Bay and the adjacent coast. They werea ferocious, brutal, and degraded tribe, said to be cannibals,and it was with them La Salle first came in contact when helanded at the mouth of the Guadalupe River.
