"Braids" - Fulani girl in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, getting her hair braided.

Fatimata comes from Eastern Burkina Faso, but has traveled to the capital, Ouagadougou, to visit relatives. She takes the opportunity of a brief respite from cooking and laundry to get her hair braided. Fatimata sports the traditional Fulani facial scarring that is considered beautiful, though her scars are not as intricate as some. The scarring is done with a razor blade, and charcoal powder mixed with cream is rubbed into the fresh wound to create the darkened effect. Fatimata also has had her lower lip and chin died black. This is fdone by piercing the lip with a needle in multiple locations, and then rubbing ground tree seeds into the dried wounds to blacken them. These are not rites of passage - Fatimata chose to have it done, because it is considered beautiful.
