Constructed between 1283 and 1289 under the direction of King Edward I, the castle was designed by Master James of St. George as part of the "iron ring" of fortifications around North Wales. Its strategic location atop a rocky ridge provides commanding views over the town of Conwy, showcasing a prime example of medieval urban planning. The castle's eight massive towers and two barbicans create an imposing silhouette that dominates the Conwy skyline. Its high curtain walls, reaching up to 30 feet thick in places, were engineered to withstand siege warfare. The turrets and ramparts visible in the foreground of the view demonstrate the intricate defensive systems employed in medieval castle design. From its vantage point, the castle offers panoramic views of Conwy town, a remarkably well-preserved medieval settlement. The town's layout, with its grid-like streets and defensive walls, illustrates the integrated design of castle and town fortifications characteristic of Edward I's Welsh strongholds.
