In 1901, work wasstarted on the construction of the El Paso and SouthwesternRailway, the road being completed the year following, givingDeming direct railway connection with the great mining re-gions of southern Arizona and of Sonora, Mexico, and thedistinction of being one of the two towns in New Mexico,namely Santa Fe and Deming, having three independent rail-roads. The towns location is well chosen, standing as it doeson a broad, level plain at an altitude of about 4,300 feet, andsurrounded with picturesque mountains. It always enjoys acool, refreshing breeze in summer, tempering the heat of July. From a commercialstandpoint it is the natural supply point of an extensive regionfurnishing supplies for the cattle ranches for miles to theeast, west and south, and for the farmers of the Mimbres Val-ley to the north, while the people of the mining camps in thevarious parts of Luna and Grant counties to the west and tothe north come to Deming for their supplies and to ship theirores. The water of Deming is noted for its purity and theabundance of the supply, the Mimbres river sinking into thegravel about twenty miles north of Deming and running be-neath the surface in an inexhaustible stream directly underthe town.
