Rheostat. A rheostat is a variable resistor. A resistance wire is wound around a cylinder, and a moveable contact may be slid along the coil. The further along the coil, the higher the resistance. If both ends of the coil and the contact are connected to a circuit, the rheostat becomes a potentiometer or voltage divider.
