Napoleon Bonaparte (on horseback) commanding revolutionary troops in street fighting on 13 Vendemiaire (5 October). Napoleon's decisive action in putting down what was a serious insurrection brought him to national prominence and earned him promotion to the command of the Army of the Interior in 1796.
