Why not, therefore, POTENTIAL CANCER OE THE BREAST. 221 be on the lookout for such lesions? If these were removed, might we not expect a great decrease in the number of cancersof the skin and mucous membrane? What Bloodgood says of bone is equally true of all other tissuesand organs of the body, including the breast. I want to emphasize the fact, however, that in case of thebreast the lesion is not always palpable. (Cases II and IIIreported above.) Tumor formation is a late manifestation of cancer, albeit inmany situations the earliest that can be appreciated. In the. Fig. 3.— (Case V, Miss B.; 1/5 obj. Rhamy.) Duct cancer with chronic in-flammatory connective tissue hyperplasia. Note the cancer cells filling and dilat-ing a duct in the upper central portion of the picture. In the lower two-thirds ofthe picture are several normal ducts surrounded by hyperplastic connective tissue. breast, however, the first sign of cancer may be an abnormalsecretion or a retraction of the nipple. My object in writing this paper is threefold: i. To show thatbenign tumors and such pathologic changes in the breast asresult from chronic inflammation, abnormal involution (fibrousand granular hyperplasia with retention cysts), and trauma, arepotentially cancerous. 2. That actual cancer as demonstratedby microscopic examinations may be present without palpabletumor formation. 3. That the only way to differentiate betweenpotential cancer and actual cancer is by microscopic exam
